“গন্ধMAN” is a docu fiction on the Independent Artist – Subhasish Khamaru.
Aroma man’s story has different fragrances. He is a musician, a theatre practitioner and an incense-stick seller who’s taken a pledge to plant a tree everyday for the rest of his lives.He started his theatre career, when he was in 1978, with ‘Sobuj Mon’.
He made his professional directorial debut when he was only 17! He was born in a very cultural family. His grandfather was an Esraj player. His mother was an acclaimed classical singer.He grew up primarily in the midst of a musical and cultural environment. Once he fell in love with the theatre and take it as a full time profession. Due to being far away from Kolkata, he had to face many obstacles. He gives classes on music and recitation. He wrote many plays among them 78 have been staged.
He was greatly influenced by Safdar Hashmi (1954 – 1989). Safdar Hashmi, was a communist playwright and director, best known for his work with street theatre in India. He was also an actor, lyricist and theorist and he is still considered an important voice in political theatre. Our ‘গন্ধ-Man’ Subhasish Khamaru was deeply influenced by that personality. To fight against his poverty, he started to sell incense – sticks. But with a twist he usually sells his products on his bicycle With the melodies of Rabindranath Tagore. He sings very well from his childhood.
People used to come out to hear his melodious voice and buy his products. He has made a incense stick shop. His shop is called ‘Abhinandan Dhupghar’. This place connects all the local cultural activists. Every evening nearby cultural people come here and a practice session is going on. Apart from that, ‘গন্ধ-Man’ is a man of compassionate heart. He always ready to help the people around him. He pledged to plant a tree everyday for the rest of his life. He funded his own theatre group called ‘Roddur’. ‘Roddur’ is now a registered theatre group and several productions of it are staged in different places. In this way, he is spreading different aromas of culture and humanity to the society through his various activities. The number of such people is gradually decreasing from our surrounding world. JUST SHORTS have tried to find out such people from the society and this series is a tribute for them.
